******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************
Urban Contemporary is a specific type of music radio format, with branches such as mainstream urban and rhythmic contemporary. The term was popularized by DJ Frankie Crocker during his time as a program director for New York’s WBLS radio station back in 1974. The term "Urban Contemporary" has a strong association with African-American music. For Latinos, Urban Contemporary for Latinos is more Latin urban, notably Reggaeton, bachata, or Latin hip hop.
Most radio stations promoted a music playlist comprised of nothing but R&B, hip hop, R&B, electronic dance music such as drum and bass and dubstep, and Caribbean music particularly zouk, reggae, reggaeton, bouyon, and every now and then Soca (in London, Toronto, Miami, New York City, and Boston). It was developed through the characteristics of genres such as R&B and soul. This type of music is popular among African-Americans, and virtually all radio stations with formats have branches in cities with considerable African-American populations.
Some radio stations play classic 70s’ and 80s’ soul music, while others play gospel music. Todays music has evolved. Some radio stations play contemporary R&B and rap, sometimes combined with dance beats.
